What is that loud 'barking' sound?

Short answer: It's just a hydraulic pump saving fuel.

That sound (often heard on Airbus planes) is the PTU (Power Transfer Unit). It balances hydraulic pressure between systems. It sounds like a dog barking, but it's a sign the system is working perfectly.
