Why are we waiting so long on the runway to take off?
Short answer: We are waiting for the air to settle from the last plane.
Large planes leave swirling air behind them as they fly, called 'wake turbulence'. Air Traffic Control forces us to wait a specific number of minutes on the runway to let that air calm down completely before we take off. The delay is literally a built-in, mandatory safety buffer.
