Turbulence What If?
How do pilots see thunderstorms at night or inside clouds?
Short answer: We have advanced weather radar inside the nose of the plane.
Pilots do not rely on their eyes to find storms. The nose of the plane contains a powerful radar that paints a highly detailed, color-coded map of the weather hundreds of miles ahead. We see exactly where the heavy rain and turbulence are, and we simply steer the plane safely around it long before we ever get close.
